Nevertheless, Nadya believed in the sincerity of Yevlashkin, took the application, and Kolya went with her to the village of Bukhalovo (“oh, and the name that speaks to you …”), since he had nowhere else to go. The vacancies in the village were not so hot, I had to get a job as a milker on a farm. Nadya didn’t let him in, because there was already one man in the house: Nadya’s twelve-year-old but very serious son Romka.
A few days later, Nikolai got into serious trouble: a couple of thieves cut off the electric cable that powered the farm with all its milking equipment. Yevlashkin, who tried to stop lawlessness, received a tire iron in the forehead and thundered into the hospital. From that moment, a noticeable warming of relations between him and Nadezhda began. But Romka stood up to his death: he and his mother suffered everything from his father, a drunkard, so he will not tolerate a former criminal in the family.
Nikolai did not argue: he quit the milking, said goodbye to new acquaintances and got on the first bus to the regional center. Only the jaws played on his cheekbones when through the rear window he looked at Nadezhda, who had come running to say goodbye to the bus stop …
