For all my messing around, the central message is this: Surviving trauma leaves scars, often in the form of thick walls between us and the world. Those walls feel like they’re keeping us safe, but they are not. They’re preventing us from feeling what we should: pride and love for ourselves. Because the truth of the matter is that you did it. You did it! You survived. The final step of that journey is giving yourself the high five and the hug that you deserve. You deserve the love that you’d give a friend if they did what you have."
